The whitewashed dining room of Da Tonino, divided by a double stone arch and full of guests

Via del Governo Vecchio, Roma

Three generations, one room, no sign on the door.

A family trattoria steps from Piazza Navona. You push through the beads, you squeeze in elbow-to-elbow, and Tonino keeps you flush with Roman staples.

The room

Whitewash, a double arch, paper on the tables

Brown paint on an uneven wood ceiling. Locals pressed shoulder to shoulder. Waiters merry and a little brusque, moving faster than you can decide. This is old-school Rome, comfortable and casual and completely unbothered by trends.

Unlike most Roman trattorias, Da Tonino leans on vegetables and legumes in its pasta — broccoli, beans, and above all eggplant. The pasta alle melanzane is a Roman answer to pasta alla norma: plump, rich, and the reason regulars stop reading the rest of the list.

No reservations. No website to book on. No fuss. You show up, you wait, you eat — and a full meal with wine still lands around €28 a person.

Signature

Pasta alle Melanzane

Legendary. Order it even if you came for the cacio e pepe.

First time?

Four things to know before you push through the beads

01

Look for the beads, not a sign

There is no sign above the door. On Via del Governo Vecchio you look for a bead curtain hanging in a doorway with Roman dialect and clinking plates coming out of it.

02

Come at opening, or wait

No reservations, no phone, no website booking. Tables fill within twenty minutes. Arrive early, or stand outside and let Tonino wave you in.

03

Order like a Roman

One antipasto to share, a pasta each, one secondo between two. A carafe of the house red. Bread and paper tablecloth included.

04

Don't mistake brusque for unfriendly

The waiters are merry and fast and will not read you a poem about the ingredients. The food is no-frills and quality, period.

Visit

Via del Governo Vecchio

A short walk from Piazza Navona, down a narrow street in the centro storico. Look for the doorway with the bead curtain — there is no sign, and that is the point.

Tonight's plan

Carciofo alla romana. Pasta alle melanzane. Polpette. A carafe of red.

That is the meal most regulars order, and it is hard to do better. Bring cash-sized expectations and an appetite; leave the dress code at the hotel.

Roman dialect, clinking plates, paper tablecloths. Same as ever.
